27 April is South African Freedom Day Celebrations!
African Travel Canvas provides a good perspective of our SA inhabitants freedom day celebrations as extracted below:
Why do we celebrate Freedom Day in South Africa?
Freedom Day is a day of respect and commemoration. Celebrated on the 27th of April each year, Freedom Day honors the anniversary of South Africa’s first non-racial election of 1994 and pays homage to the country’s liberation from Apartheid rule, where the minority exercised prejudice political power over the majority of the country.
The History of Freedom Day
Freedom Day is celebrated annually on the 27th of April in honor of the auspicious day in 1994 when the first non-racial election was held in the country. South Africa celebrates Freedom Day to mark the liberation of our country and its people from 300 years of colonialism, White minority domination, politically enforced prejudice and Apartheid.
Apartheid was officially implemented in South Africa in 1948; however, colonialism and oppression of the African majority had plagued various countries throughout the African continent since as early as the 1600s. to read more click on link below. https://africantravelcanvas.com/experiences/history-and-politics/what-is-freedom-day-and-why-do-we-celebrate-it
As a democratic country it is expected that the population demographics of the country is fairly represented in the economies activities, and so Government fulfills the expectation through regulating transformation policies and best practice frameworks namely BBBEE Act, BBBEE Codes of good practice gazettes, Preferential Procurement Framework Act, Volume 5 Economic Development REIPPP Framework as a means to the end target of equality and equity. One of the transformation measurement instruments is the Commission for Employment Equity (CEE) annual report which provides a broad overview of the transformation patterns in the employment market. The latest 21st annual CEE report records the national economic active population demographics as per the table below, indicative that the demographics reported should be a representation of the South African population in terms of gender and race in all economic activity. However, as highlighted below South Africa’s transformation achievements have not yet reached this demographic profile, and so transformation strides continue to extend in all government procurement activities to aggressively achieve this outcome.
The good news is that South Africans have embraced the countries transformation ambitions, and so have our global investors.
Our transformation story continues, and today we are thankful for our transformation Champions who fought for equality and equity and have paved the way for all South African citizens to have meaningful participation in South Africa’s economic growth and benefits.
